Tokyo Japan Earthquake

A powerful magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck northern Japan this morning, triggering a two foot tsunami and causing widespread damage across the region. Authorities have reported at least 23 people injured and are urging residents in coastal areas to remain on high alert for further aftershocks and waves.

The quake, which struck at approximately 10:30 AM local time, was centered off the coast of the Tohoku region. Initial reports indicate infrastructure damage, including disrupted train services and power outages in several prefectures. Decade of Resilience

The memory of March 11, 2011, remains etched in the collective consciousness of Japan and the world. On that day, the nation was struck by a powerful seismic event—the Tōhoku earthquake—that triggered a devastating tsunami, leading to one of the most costly and complex natural disasters in modern history.

The Tremor and the Tsunami

At 2:46 PM local time, an offshore megathrust earthquake with a massive magnitude of M9.0 to 9.1 ruptured along the Japan Trench. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan and the fourth most powerful in the world since 1900.

The epicenter was located about 72 km (45 miles) east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku. The resulting colossal movement of the seafloor generated an immense tsunami, which arrived at the coast within minutes.
