Is Social Media a Need?
Social media has become a powerful force in the daily lives of teenagers, shaping how they communicate, spend their time, and view themselves. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat are now part of most students’ routines, with many teens spending several hours a day scrolling, posting, and interacting online.
While these platforms offer entertainment and an easy way to stay connected with friends, experts and educators are raising concerns about their impact. One major issue is the effect on teens’ self-esteem. Constant exposure to carefully edited photos and highlight reels of others’ lives can lead to unhealthy comparisons. Many teenagers report feeling pressure to look a certain way or to participate in trending challenges to fit in.
“Social media creates unrealistic expectations,” said one local high school counselor. “Students often measure their worth by likes and followers, which can affect their confidence and mental health.”
Beyond emotional effects, social media is also influencing students’ academic performance. Teachers say it is increasingly common to see students checking their phones during class or being distracted by notifications while trying to complete assignments. Some schools have introduced policies to limit phone use during school hours, but enforcing these rules remains a challenge.
Despite these concerns, many teens say social media plays a positive role in their lives. It allows them to maintain friendships, express creativity, and stay informed about trends and current events. For today’s generation, growing up without social media seems almost unimaginable.
As technology continues to evolve, social media’s presence in teen culture is unlikely to fade. The challenge for parents, educators, and students alike will be finding a balance between enjoying its benefits and managing its risks.
