Guthrie Athletes Signing
On Monday of this past week, two Guthrie Bluejay football players, Maddox Vaughan and Ethan Gilbert, officially signed to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level. Signing to play college football is a major milestone for any high school athlete. It represents years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance both on and off the field.
Head coach Kelly Beeby emphasized just how meaningful this accomplishment is, noting that “earning a college football opportunity has never been more challenging for high school athletes.” With increased competition and limited roster spots, reaching the next level requires not only talent, but also discipline, strong character, and commitment in the classroom.
Maddox Vaughan was first widely recognized for his outstanding baseball abilities, but over the course of his senior year, he proved just how much of an impact he could make on the football field as well. This season, Vaughan recorded 38 receptions for 747 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns, becoming one of Guthrie’s most dynamic offensive threats. One of his most memorable performances came against Bishop McGuinness, where he totaled 225 all-purpose yards in a standout game. His athleticism, versatility, and work ethic helped turn an impressive senior season into a college opportunity. Vaughan has signed to play football at Northwestern Oklahoma State University, where he plans to continue developing his skills at the next level.
Ethan Gilbert made his impact in the trenches as an offensive lineman. A two-year starter, Gilbert played a crucial role in Guthrie’s run-focused offense. His consistency and strength helped power the Bluejays’ ground game, and he averaged around a 79 percent blocking grade. In addition to his football success, Gilbert is also a two-time state powerlifter, showcasing his dedication to strength and conditioning. He has decided to attend NEO A&M, where he will continue his football career. Gilbert will also join his brother, Landon Gilbert, a former Guthrie football player who currently plays at NEO A&M, making the opportunity even more special for their family.
The Guthrie football program is extremely proud of both Vaughan and Gilbert for their achievements. Not only did they excel on the field, but they also maintained strong academic performance in the classroom — a key component of earning the chance to compete at the collegiate level. With the support of their coaches, teachers, teammates, families, and the Guthrie community, both young men are well prepared for the next chapter of their lives. Their signings serve as an inspiration to younger athletes in the program, showing that dedication, resilience, and hard work can lead to incredible opportunities.
